The sun sets in the west, it is almost 21.00, Salzburger Platz, Kaprun. Respectfully we look up to the glaciers of the Kitzsteinhorn from where we will look down to Kaprun on the last kilometres of our joint experience.
We switch on our headlamps and start our adventure, accompanied by cheering fans, on our way out of Kaprun, then we turn towards the mountains, forming a chain of lights. After the first Nach den 1200 meters difference in altitude we carefully find our way through the night, then downhill until we are welcomed by the lights of the village Fusch. Along the river Fuscher Ache to the first supply location in Ferleiten. There we leave civilisation for good, first some meters on flat terrain, but then uphill without compromise until we cross the Alps at 2663m for the first time. To our right we can see the Großglockner, with its shimmering glaciers.
Further down we pass the second supply location at the Glocknerhaus, then across the dam and again uphill along a fantastic trail, the Wiener Höhenweg. At dawn the lights of Salmhütte and Glorerhütte offer us a friendly welcome. Quickly we pass and concentrate on the technically demanding part, first the Wiener Höhenweg to Peischlachtörl, then along the Glorer Gärten down to Kals. At the pavilion in Kals a warm meal, our dropbags and fans will be awaiting us. There are also those who will soon start on the Glockner Trail. The first half of the race lies behind us!
Out of Kals the sun warms our backs while at the same time the Kalser Bach offers refreshing, cool air. It accompanies us through the valley up to Dorfer Tal where the view opens up. To the right the glaciers are shimmering and we slowly gain height. We leave behind the fantastically shimmering Dorfer See and gain height on the last meters up to Kalser Tauern. At 2518 we cross the Alps for the second time, looking back at the Großglockner and towards Kitzsteinhorn. Now we need to concentrate on the difficult terrain downhill, along Weißsee towards the next supply location at Berghotel Rudolfshütte.
With filled containers we make our way down to Tauernmoossee from where trail again leads us uphill to the Kapruner Törl (2639 m). Downhill we run along the Lake Mooserboden, cross its gigantic dam and concentrate on the last part of the trail down to Kaprun. The last kilometres are on flat terrain, accompanied by cheering viewers and friends to the finish in Kaprun.
In Kals at Großglockner the first participants of the Ultra Trail have come through at 05.00 and the centre of the village with its pavilion belongs to us, the trailrunners. We admire those who have already left 60 km and the night behind. It is 09.00, now our adventure is about to start.
From Kals through Großdorf, we are accompanied and cheered at by spectators. At the beginning, the route differs from the Ultratrail. We pass the Taurerwirt. The Kalser Bach fills the air with coolness and accompanies us through the valley up to Dorfer Tal. There the view widens, to our right we can see the shimmering glaciers, slowly gaining height. We leave the fantastically blue-green shimmering Dorfer See behind and gain height on the last meters towards the Kalser Tauern. At 2518m we cross the Alps, looking back at the Großglockner and towards Kitzsteinhorn. Now we need to concentrate on the technically demanding terrain downhill, along Weißsee towards the next supply location at Berghotel Rudolfshütte.
Having filled our containers, the trail leads downhill to Kapruner Törl (2639 m). Uphill we run along Speichersee Mooserboden, cross its gigantic dam and concentrate on the last part of the race down to Kaprun. There the last flat kilometres lead us towards the finish area, where we are awaited by friends and spectators.
