Voorwoord Martien Baars.
Below an overview is presented of all 25 ultraruns in The Netherlands for 2005, as known at the end of October 2004. Each run is denoted here with its geographical name of the start location and the runs are listed in chronological order. The site of the start is printed in bold (and point to point runs have the finish site in bold as well). Among the 25 runs, 17 will be held on loops varying between less than 2 up to 10 or 20 km. Steenbergen (a new one), Stein, Apeldoorn, Hoofddorp, Den Haag, Winschoten and Epe (track) are the official KNAU-races. The other runs on relatively short loops are Schinnen, Soerendonk (2x), Wijdewormer, Maasdam, Dieverbrug, Diever, Gouda, Amersfoort and Almere. The (J-C) marking means that the loop is officially measured by a KNAU-official with a Jones-Counter.
In addition, there are 8 landscape runs over distances longer than the marathon. Five consist of large loops, and two of these are official KNAU-races: Texel, with a near-loop of 60 km – the 120 km run is composed of an anti-clockwise followed by a clockwise loop - and Leeuwarden, with the famous 11-cities-loop of 206 km. The others comprise Bunschoten and Brielle with nice loops of 50 km and Amsterdam with a loop of 60 km. Finally, there are 3 point-to-point runs: Scheveningen-Amersfoort, Ter Apel–Bourtange, and Maastricht-Pieterburen, the only Dutch stage run. It could well be that this discovery tour of 500 km in 7 days will have its final edition in 2005, so if you ever intended to run this stretch with guidance and care, do it next year …
A number of ultraruns include the participation of relay teams (Texel, Apeldoorn, Bunschoten, Leeuwarden, Den Haag, Brielle, Gouda, Winschoten, Epe) and many ultraruns offer shorter distances as well. Check for alle details the run info on the websites that are listed, but please note that these may not have been updated yet for the 2005 edition.
