Op 19 juni j.l. heeft Wim Epskamp de West Highland Way gewonnen, een wedstrijd over 153 km van Glasgow naar Fort William. Op ultraned.org is het even tussen neus en lippen door gemeld (met dank aan Ruud Jakobs), maar helaas niet uitvoerig aan de orde gekomen.
\nIk heb Wim gisteren 30\/6 even gebeld om hem te feliciteren en om te vragen of hij zin en tijd had om een verslag voor ultraned te maken. De tijd ontbrak hem helaas (als onderwijzer), in deze hectische schoolweken vlak voor het begin van de vakantie.
\nDaarom hieronder toch nog de volledige uitslag van de West Highland Way 2004 en daarbij de wervende tekst van die website http:\/\/www.westhighlandwayrace.org\/
\n‘Essentially the object is simple, you start at Milngavie Railway Station (7miles north of Glasgow) at 1am on 19 th June & run\/jog\/walk to Fort William Leisure Centre by noon on the 20th June, 35 hours to cover 153km (95 miles) including 3543m (11624ft) of ascent.
\nAlong the way you pass through checkpoints within time limits. In order to participate you must have your own motorised backup, consisting of at least two people, one of which must be capable of covering the last two sections with you (or find you) if assistance is required or during the hours of darkness.
\nWim Epskamp (16:26:50) & Kate Jenkins (17:37:48) hold the course records, both set in 2000.

Dit was Epskamp’s 3e deelname, na zijn debuut in 1999 (4e in 19 uur zoveel) en zijn winst in 2000 (16.26, nog steeds het parcoursrecord!). Nu in 2004 finishte hij als winnaar in 17.40. Met een stevige Noordenwind tegen begreep ik van Wim. Zijn zus die in Engeland woont heeft hem begeleid.
\nZeer uitzonderlijk dat een Nederlander zo goed presteert op zo’n heuvel- en bergachtig parcours! Wat dat betreft loopt Wim echt in de voetsporen van Jan Knip, die als ‘Flying Dutchman’ in (een ander deel van) Schotland bekend stond.<\/p>\n
