Zaterdag 10 juni wordt in het Italiaanse Badia Prataglia het IAU WK trail gelopen. Waar in vorige jaren de afstand rond de 80 km was, wordt vanaf dit jaar het ene jaar een korte afstand van rond de 50 km en het andere jaar een langere afstand van rond de 80 km gelopen. Het IAU WK trail wordt gelopen in het middelgebergte de Apennijnen. Het gebied waar gelopen wordt heet de Sacred Forests, het is een licht bergachtig bosgebied. De trail zal toch een stuk zwaarder zijn dan de gemiddelde Ardense trail gezien de 2900 hoogtemeters plus op het parcours van 49 km. De wedstrijd krijgt van de ITRA 7 punten voor het onderdeel Mountain Level, hetgeen betekent dat er genoeg uitdaging in het parcours zit. Dat wordt ook in de route omschrijving weergegeven waarin ca. de helft van het parcours de classificatie ‘high difficulty’ krijgt toebedeeld. Er zitten 7 langere klimmen in het parcours. Het laagste punt is 540 meter hoog en het hoogste punt 1391 meter. 2900 hoogtemeters+ op een kort parcours van 49 km betekent veel steile klimmen en afdalingen.
Deze keer geen uitgebreide voorbeschouwing maar een korter artikel met links naar andere websites. Op Ultraned zal er geen live wedstrijdverslag staan. Ondergetekende is zaterdag bij de bijeenkomst aanwezig van de Nederlandse selectie 24-uurlopers en begeleiders die op 1-2 juli bij het WK 24 uur in Belfast zal uitkomen.

Vrouwen: Ragna Debats, Kim Mulder, Mirthe Overkamp, Karin Sloove en Leonie Ton. Maartje Bastings is geblesseerd en zal helaas niet mee kunnen doen.
Mannen: Erwin Adan, Zac Freudenberg, Geordie Klein, Dominique Pankow, Tim Pleijte en Peter van der Zon.
Het Belgisch team bestaat uit:
Mannen: Nicola Bucci, Matthieul Deville en Etienne van de Gasse.

The 2017 Trail World Championships takes place in Badia Prataglia, Italy on June 10th. The event is being run over a 50km course and will see 291 athletes representing 36 countries.
The championship event taking place in the National Park of Foreste Casentinesi is located in the central Appennines and has the distinction of being one of the oldest forests in Europe. The untouched Sasso Fratino forest has also been nominated to become a World Heritage site.
The Men´s race is quite competitive with the top 5 runners from last year´s Trail World Championships held in Geres, Portugal all in the field. Current World Champion, Luis Alberto Hernando (ESP) is once again one of the favorites in the race. Nicolas Martin (FRA) silver medalist in the event last year leads a very strong French team who are also top contenders to take home the team title.
French teammates, Sylvain Court and Benoit Cori will be hoping to get on the podium. Marco de Gasperi (ITA), David Roche (USA) and Tiago Aires (POR) will try to have a strong race to make the championship podium as well and in turn help their respective teams to podium medals.
In the women´s race, Caroline Chaverot (FRA) will not be returning to defend her title. Nevertheless, the field is indeed quite deep again in this year´s race. Azara Garcia (ESP) will try and repeat her amazing performance in Geres where she finished second. Ragna Debats (NED) will also try to replicate her run from last year and move up the podium from her third place finish.
Nathalie Mauclair (FRA) will be leading a very strong French team and hoping for a podium finish. Megan Roche (USA), Kathrin Gotz (SUI), Nikolina Sustic (CRO) and Jo Meek (GBR) will all be looking at strong performances to lead their respective teams to the very coveted team podium spots as well.
Both men´s and women´s fields have outstanding entrants and both races promise to be exciting events!
This is the second edition of the cooperation between IAU-ITRA. The first event last year went very successful. The two bodies have divided up the various responsibilities leading up to and during the weekend of the competitions.
