The spanish runner Gonzales (winner of 100K of Madrid earlier this year) took the lead from the early beginning of the race. The Russian Vishnyagov tried to follow in the first km’s but drew back after 10K. A cfirst chasing group was led by the Italian Ardemagni, toether with him Martinez and Jimenez (ESP) and the Russian Izmaylov and Zhalybin. One minute later an elite group with most of the other favourites like Bracza, Fetizon, Djouadi (FRA), Papanikitas (BEL), Spiridonov, Thyazkorob (RUS), Lindvai (SVK), Bula (BLR), Holovnytski (UKR) and Aivar (EST). In Handzame they passed the 30.7km in 1h53’40” (Gonzales), 2′ later Ardemagni followed by the two Spanish runners, all three less than 1′ in front of the elite group.
