De Pafos marathon is een aardige marathon in het voorjaar, als het hier nog aan de frisse kant is. Een marathon op Cyprus. Niet al te groot, want vorig jaar telde het ongeveer 500 deelnemers. Ook geen marathon die zich richt op toppers, maar een die zich richt op de breedtesporter. In 2004 was de winnar bij de mannen de Fransman Didier Pommey – tijd: 2 hours 52 minutes 41 seconds. Winnares bij de vrouwen was de Duitse Sussan Seidel – tijd: 3 hours 27 minutes 23 seconds.
Vreemd in het geheel is dat men aan buitenlandse deelnemers 24 Cyprusse ponden vraagt aan inschrijfgeld, terwijl een Cyprioot maar 15 betaald. Aan het verschil in portokosten voor het toesturen van inschrijfbevestiging en de uitslag kan het toch niet liggen. Eind oktober legde ik het voor aan de organisatie. 31 oktober kreeg ik het volgende antwoord:
{i}The entry-fees are a very important income for us as organisers. I believe that you understand that not all expenses of the race are covered from sponsorship. We are not tourist agents neither we own a hotel to accommodate the foreign runners so we do not have an income sourse other than the entry fees. I have taken part to a lot of races in Europe where the cost for entry was higher and I had to pay extra for my T-shirt, drinks (beer) and transfers to the starting point. We may raise the entry for locals in the future to match the entry of the overseas runners so as to avoid any discrimination.
